The FDA Has Approved The Irradiation Of Greens

In an effort to reduce health problems associated with raw food, the FDA has agreed that foods such as spinach and lettuce can be irradiated.
The current list of foods that can now be irradiated include:
- Iceberg lettuce
- Spinach
- Meat
- Poultry
- Some shellfish
The FDA's decision, effective today, adds iceberg lettuce and spinach to the short but growing list of foods approved for irradiation, including meat, poultry and some shellfish.
However, a quote from the food safety chief at Costco implies that it might not be a commercial success as he says "Mom wouldn't buy it" .
The process kills the bacteria in the food by subjecting it to ´ionizing radiation´ which the FDA claims does not have to mean a reduction in the nutritional value of the food.
Recent food scares may bring more consensus from consumers however following the E.Coli outbreak caused by spinach and the recent food poisoning from tomatoes.
Food that has been irradiated will have to be labeled, so at least for the moment, consumers will be able to make the choice whether or not they want their food with warts and all or bacteria free through irradiation.
